Last blog

I was not looking forward to this class at all. I have always hated reading and have not been a fain of writing so you could say I was dreading this class. It turned out to be not at bad at I was expecting. The readings were annoying and I wouldn't say I was excited about any projects but I made it though. We are finally done with this class and I have made it out with a good grade... better than I was expecting. This was my first time blogging and I was not excited about it but it has been a nice way to express some stuff. I dont think I will be doing a blog anyother time soon but who knows... maybe sometime eventually.

Tuesday Post

I hate being sick. I am only at school for two more weeks and I'm sick. Seriously I am going crazy! I need to study and finish everything up but no all I want to do is sleep. I was feeling perfectly fine about studying and taking exams and finishing everything up but now I am starting to freak out. I have an exam tonight that I am still trying to study for. I have an exam tomorrow that was postponed from Monday so I have to finish studying for that tomorrow. This project is due Thursday. I am almost done but still there is just a lot of little work and my brain is not functioning right now. On top of all of that its one of my best friend's birthdays and I don't want to be a party pooper for it but I am way too sick to go out with her.

almost done

I am running out of ideas of things to write about. Today is going to just be a random thought blog post. I am going to the mall tonight, I hope I do not spend too much money. Twenty- nine days until my surgery. That is pretty nerve wracking. I am starting to get stressed about the surgery and recovery and what I will be able to do next year. The one good thing is I am kind of overlooking the stress of the end of the year. I am so happy that we are getting out of this class so early the last couple days! It makes me sooo happy! I can't wait to be done with this semester. Hopefully I will be able to keep up these grades next semester.

countdown

Today is Thursday and I am going home tomorrow! I am so excited to go home! I have not been home since spring break but I was only actually home for a couple days. My birthday was last weekend and I have not seen any of my family to celebrate my birthday. We are getting together with family to celebrate my birthday and my little cousin's. I have plans to see my friend that I have not seen since Christmas and I am so exited to see him! I have missed him and my family so much I dont even know what to do with myself out here anymore. All I can do is look forward to going home tomorrow and then the count down until the end of the year starts. When we come back from Easter weekend we have two weeks of classes and one week of exams.

suggestions

My paper is based on the analysis of the Curious George the book and the movie. While writing my paper I had a tendency to describe the things George did as “curious.” Although this is fitting, it became too repetitive. The people peer editing my paper pointed out where my words were repeating and also looked up some suggestions for other similar words. This is very helpful to me because I have a bad habit of using the same words in all my works. I have found a better way to phrase most of the points about George in my paper so far so that it doesn’t come off as repetitive.

Birthday

Tomorrow is my birthday! I am going to be 19 years old. My best friend who still lives at home is coming out to Kalamazoo for the weekend. I have class in the morning then I will come home and take a nap. When Ellie comes out here we will catch up for a couple hours. We will get ready with Mallory and Kelsey. I get to pick somewhere to go to dinner. When we are done with dinner we will go to my friends work to see her and get free ice cream for my birthday. When she gets out of work we are going to go to her house for a girls night. There will be lots of talking and laughing and hopefully tons of fun.

analysis outline

Sara Gariepy
Analysis Outline
Curious George

Summary:
In the original text Curious George the children’s book George, a carefree, happy, African monkey meets the man with the big yellow hat as a result of his curiosity. George liked playing with the big yellow hat, which aided the man in catching the monkey. The man brought George back with him on the big boat. George’s curiosity caused him to encounter troubles and the man found George a nice home in the zoo.
The adaptation of the text was Curious George the Movie. In the movie Ted, the man in the big yellow hat was on a voyage to find the giant monkey idol when George finds interest in Ted’s yellow hat. George ends up following Ted all the way back to Ted’s house. All the while Ted is dealing with everything going wrong and thinks George is just causing more issues but in the end George helps him realize what he was looking for was right in front of him the whole time.

Purpose: To show kids curiosity is a great way of learning
Audience: Kids
Tone/ Voice:
Book= more of a bad tone when George causes bad things to              happen
Movie: George is happier and always happy and giggling Ted is worried, anxious, and pessimistic.
Media/design:
            Book= print water color sketches
            Movie= electronic, cartoon, bright colors

Ethos: The known story of Curious George
Pathos: The emotional connection formed between George and Ted
Logos: The happenings in the story were logically thought out, the issues and troubles they went through were real issues.

I.          Director Matthew O’Callaghan’s 2006 film adaptation of Curious George is successfully transforming H.A. Rey’s children’s story Curious George.

II.         How George and Ted met in Africa
a.     Book= Man in yellow hat takes George home with him
b.     Movie= George follows Ted and comes home with him while Ted is trying to lose him.
III.       Museum
a.     Voyage Ted goes on
b.     Mr. Bloomsburg and son
c.      Love connection with the teacher

IV.        Ending
a.     Book= Man puts George in the zoo
b.     Movie= Ted learns to love George and he saves him from getting sent back to Africa.
V. Conclusion – The adaptation of Curious George from children’s story to film was successful because the story was expanded enough to fill the demands of a film while still holding onto the lesson of the original.

winnie the pooh

Winnie the Pooh is such a wonderful children's movie. There are many different adaptations of the original story. As a child I loved to read the books. My mom would sit with us and we would read the stories over and over again. My mom loved the characters so much so they were always a part of my life. When the movie remake was made last summer my sister and I both got so excited because it brought back so many memories. I loved watching the movie so much that I bought it for my mom for Christmas and we watched it as a family on Christmas morning. I am hoping to make this project fun by relating it to such a great childhood favorite!

Charlie Brown Pictures

The top picture is a piece from the original comic The Peanuts. The original pictures are in black and white. The pictures are very simple. There is minimal shading and very simple lines. The second picture is the cover to two different Peanuts Charlie Brown movies. The characters are in color in this piece. The character's drawings are still very simple but with the color they seem to have more demention to them. The two pictures are similar in the way that no matter what media or design the Peanut's characters are shown in they are always the same drawings. The characters have kept their same style and design and they were originaly created.

spring

Spring is a wonderful time of the year! I love when the sky is bright blue and there are big fluffy white clouds floating across the sky. The fresh air is blowing through all the open spaces. The grass is green and becoming lushous. The windows are open and every morning when I wake up I hear the sweet song of the birds outside my dorm. The sun is shinning and the world is so bright! I do not know how someone can not be happy walking out side. Walking to classes is now a peaceful thing I no longer dread the idea of walking to class. My favorite thing is driving with the windows down the wind blowing through my hair my sunglasses on and my music turned up loud. I can feel it the fun times of summer are soon approaching!

Rhetorical Appeals

Ethos- the ethical appeal
pathos- the emotional appeal
logos- the appeal to logic

In the telivision show House M.D. Dr. House is the ethical appeal. He is the most credible doctor with the best medical reputation. His actual ethical reputaion is not so great though because he does whatever he thinks is necessary to help the patient. The emotional appeal is Dr. House's unique relationships with everyone on the show. He knows how to work everyone and even though he does not play by the rules and really does not seem to show much care for his patients he will do anything necessary for their health. The show House is all about using Dr. House's strange sometimes unfollowable logic to piece every bit of information together to find the sourch of the problem.

Shoes

As a little kid I never really cared about shoes. I wore whatever my mom told me to wear and I did not care. As I grew up I learned to not care at all about shoes, I would pick one favorite pare of shoes and wear them every day until they were so worn out my mom would make me get rid of them. This year I have gained a strong addiction to shoes. I love heels! All different kinds of heels. I love to wear them and I love to have a different pair to match every outfit. Even though I love shoes I am still very frugal and I only buy shoes on sale so that they are worth the price!

feedback

Peer reviewing in the past have often been very unhelpful. This time I received quite a bit of feedback. The most difficult part of this project are the twenty footnotes. The feed back from the peer reviewers are very helpful with the footnotes. It is very important to look at small details when writing papers or doing any sort of projects. The feed back on my footnotes are going to be the most helpful comments. I was very confused when writing citing the footnotes so I like having different input on what looks wrong and what looks correct.

donuts

College is full of work work and more work. Well actually, with me and my friends it's more like talk, work, giggle, work, get distracted, work, take a break to get  donuts then come back to hopefully finish the assignments before class the next morning. We had heard of this donut place called Sweetwaters but never really thought to go check it out. One night we decided to head out and see what it was all about. It was the greatest thing ever! Fresh donuts in a family environment that are only 85 cents! It has become our new favorite spot. Today our goal was to finish our homework and reward ourself with a donut but instead we are taking a break to go get donuts and hoping to possibly finish our homework later.

annotated bibliography

Annotated Bibliography: Columbine

Miller, Melissa. “I Survived the Columbine High School Shooting.” Scholastic Scope 6 Sept. 1999:18-      20. Print.

This article is a student who was in the parking lot of the school when the first shot was fired. She tells what she saw and what she did in the situation and how she feels about the shooting. She saw the first shots, the pipe bombs exploding, her friend shot and laying on the ground, the shooters and kids running from the school. She tells her story and tells the readers how they can get over difficulties without violence. This is a good piece for the paper because it is a primary source, it tells the things she saw and also how she felt.

Trust

People always say it is harder to gain trust than it is to lose it. I never realized how true that statement was until I was put in a situation dealing with trust. I was in a situation where I quickly lost trust for a person and I figured it would blow over but it really has not. You can forgive the person for what they did but you will never forget the way they hurt you. Even if you try to move on and just forget about the situation every time something is similar to the situation you think about it.Everytime you have to trust that person even for something completely different you get reminded of the situation. Sometimes I question is it going to be the awkward no trust situation it is now or will it someday fade away?

Proposal

My historical event is the Columbine High School Massacre. I will take the point of view of a student. The student I will be portraying will be a senior girl of Columbine High School. The girl's name is Addison Heights. Addison Heights has long read hair. She has fair skin which burns easily in the sun and her face turns red so quickly on embarrassment. She is a fun loving young woman. Addison has a younger sister who she would do anything to protect. Addison's sister's name is Alex Heights. Both Addison and Alex are dancers, their mother is very involved with their dance lives and they spend a majority of their free time at the dance studio. Addison is on the Columbine Varsity Cheer Team this year and her younger sister Alex is in the school's junior varsity Pom team. Addison's little sister Alex is a freshman this year and Addison has done a great job looking out for her sister and making sure her first year at the high school is a good one. Addison is outgoing when she is with someone she knows but when she is all alone she can be quiet and shy. She loves to make people laugh an all of her friends love to laugh with her. Addison is such a loving person who cares about everyone and their feelings. When Addison gets upset whether it is because someone is mad at her or because someone else is upset she has a hard time holding back get tears. Addison is such a sweetheart and is known for just walking up to her friends and telling them they are beautiful or telling then how much she loves them. She just has this special way of lighting up the room. Why I know about the Columbine High School Massacre is that two boy students brought guns into be school and killed twelve students and one teacher. I don't know many details about the event but I think I need to learn the background of the boys, why they attacked tw school, what the authorities did in the situation and how the day happened.

Judgements

How many times have you heard people say "don't judge a book by it's cover" or "don't judge others" or "don't judge a situation if your not in it"? I understand where people are coming from when they say that but I don't fully agree with it. I agree with the idea of not making final judgments on a person at first impression and never getting to know them because of that. The part I do not agree with is the simple line of don't pass judgments. People as human nature judge things. Everytime you see a person you judge them, everytime you hear a song you judge it, everytime you eat a meal you judge it, I could go on and on, the main point, we judge on a daily basis. Judgements don't have to be bad though, you have to judge to make an opinion and lets face it everyone has there opinions. We need to accept the fact that we all make judgements just try not to make a bad judgement your final opinion before you really know a situation.

Music

Everybody listens to music. Everyone has their own styles and genres they like and everyone's picks are always a little bit different for each other's. Music is made from the soul for the soul. There are so many songs, about anything you could ever think about. One of my favorite things about music is that there are songs for my every mood. Somedays I like to listen to happy music somedays I like to listen to sad music, sometimes I love listening to old songs I used to love and just remenescing on all the memories that songs hold for me. I love that the singer writes a song because of a memory or a feeling they have but I can listen to the same song and it can mean a completely different thing to me. My absoult favorite thing about music is dancing to it. You can feel so much from just listening to a song but you can express all of that and more by dancing to it.

descriptive scene

Many moms put their young daughters in ballet classes to meet friends, get a little exercise and because they know their little girls will look so cute on stage in the little pink tutu. I was one of those little girls the only difference, I fell absolutely in love with it. I started dancing when I was three years old doing the basic combo classes and as I got older I gradually added a couple classes. Most of my friends were on the competitive team but I only took recital classes. They always heckled me to join the team but I was content with what I was doing. My eighth grade year I was taking six classes and most the girls in my classes were competing but I didn't want to join because I didn't want to be overwhelmed going into high school the next year. Freshman year came around and I was dancing basically every class I could take without being part of the competitive team and loving it. A couple days before the auditions for my sophomore year season I was talking to one of my favorite moms at the studio and she convinced to just try out just for the experience. So three days later there I was auditioning for our company and I made the diamond team with all of my friends! That was exactly  where I wanted to be.. the only problem, I got hurt two months earlier.

decisions

Decisions decision decisions... there are so many decisions to make in our lives. We make decisions all day long. We decide to wake up when the alarm goes off. We decide what to wear. Decide when to cross the street and what to eat for lunch. Life is full of decisions but why can't they all be as easy as picking out what to eat for lunch? Should we make every decision based on a gut feeling or should we analysis our options? How much thought is necessary and how much is obsessing? Desisions are in our every day but what makes one decision more important than another?

horror story

One dark night in the middle of a long cold winter horror struck my family. The family was prepairing for a great party, the finishing details were to be finnished throught out the final days coming up to the party. My beloved father and the oldest sister were in the workshed, from inside the house you could hear the saw cutting wood, the door opens and my sister walks in calm as can be.. carrying two pieces of the cut wood. Before you know it the door opens again this time not so calm and a scream from the outside comes in not once but twice. The feeling of horror hit the house when I turned the courner and my dad was standing at the door with his hand to his chest and blood all over his clothes...

wishing and waiting

Waiting.. what are you waiting for? We are all waiting for something. The anticipitation levels in the world today are so high. We wait and wait and wait and wait and build up suspence and anticipition for what we are waiting for. We put so much energy into the waiting. Sometimes we dread whats coming, sometimes we are excited, either way I think we all make up situations in our head of what's going to happen. I am guilty of this, I feel as if I am always waiting for something and as I wait my days are being consumed by the thoughts of what that suspence in the end will bring. One of my favorite quotes says "Stop worrying so much; worrying is using your imigination to create things you don't want". I have to remind myself daily that as I wait I need to have patience because all the thoughts that consume my mind won't do me any good in the end. I need to push those thoughts out of my mind and use my energy for something that is useful in the now.

creation myth

Ever since I can remember my grandparents had a house up north. It started as a whole family house where all the cousins and aunts and uncles went. The original house was a small white house on top of a hill looking down on the big beautiful Mullet Lake. I was born a couple years before my grandparents built the big log home next door (this is the first house I ever remember being in). By the time I can remember my own memories my grandma and her two sisters who shared the white house all had there own homes in the town. All the cousins (my dad) started getting married and having kids and bringing their families up. I have millions of memories from that town, some are fun, some sad, some happy but all will be part of me forever. I love that place and I hope my kids will be able to enjoy our family stories and make memories of their own.

Hi! My name is Sara. I am a freshman at Western Michigan and studying Occupational Therapy. I am from Brighton Michigan and went to private school my whole life. I started dancing when I was 3 and fell in love with it. I was on the competitive team with my studio in high school. Dance was always my life, I spent all my time after school at the studio and I grew really close with the girls there.
